The short version

1. Who this covers

This policy explains how SideQuestAI (ABN 50 405 936 474) ("we") handles personal information when you use BetweenPages. We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.

2. What we collect, and why

WhatWhy
Username and password hash To create and secure your account. We store a salted hash, never the password itself. An email address is optional and only used if you give us one.
Terms acceptance record
(version, timestamp, IP address)
To show which version of the Terms you agreed to and when.
Your knowledge graphs
(characters, events, relationships, places, themes)
This is the product. Extracted from books you provide and shown only to you.
Reading progress, chats, corrections, favourites, collections To gate spoilers correctly and keep your account state across devices. This includes text you choose to type into chats or corrections.
Book files you upload Held only in volatile server memory during analysis to build your knowledge graph. The application never saves the EPUB to persistent storage and discards it when analysis ends. See section 4.
Derived data
(screened graph checkpoints and search embeddings of graph facts)
Built to complete analysis and retrieve specific facts. Checkpoints are removed when analysis finishes; graph-fact embeddings are deleted when you delete the book.
Payment records
(credit balance, transaction IDs)
To sell and track extraction credits. Card details go directly to Stripe. We never see or store them.
Server logs
(IP, request path, status, timing)
IP address, user id, request path, status and timing, recorded for every request, to keep the service running, debug faults and detect abuse. Rotated, and typically retained about 30 days.

We do not use advertising trackers, analytics pixels, or third-party cookies. The only cookie we set is the one that keeps you signed in.

3. What we never do

4. Your book files

When you upload an EPUB, the application holds it only in volatile server memory, parses and analyses it, and never saves the EPUB to persistent storage. The raw bytes and parsed chapter text are discarded when analysis ends. What remains is a mechanically screened structured graph of short factual notes, names, relationships, events and themes, not the EPUB or chapter text.

Where analysis happens. Your EPUB is uploaded to our servers and analysed there in volatile memory. There is no on-device option: the book text leaves your device, because that is how the service works. Standard extraction runs on hardware we operate; priority extraction sends text to a third-party AI provider. The application never saves the uploaded EPUB to persistent storage and discards its source material when analysis ends.

What we do and do not control. We do not intentionally retain uploaded book text after analysis, and we never use it to train anything. Infrastructure outside the application, including a reverse proxy, operating-system swap, crash dumps, hosting systems, or a third-party AI provider, may handle data under separate settings or terms. If third-party handling matters to you, do not use priority cloud extraction.

5. Who we share with

We share personal information only with the providers needed to run the service:

We may also disclose information where the law requires it. Some providers may store data outside Australia; where that happens we take reasonable steps to ensure it is handled consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.

6. Keeping it safe

Passwords are salted and hashed. Traffic is served over HTTPS. Access to the production system is limited to the operator. No system is perfectly secure, but if a data breach occurs that is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify affected users and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.

7. Keeping and deleting your data

8. Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email support@betweenpages.ai and we'll respond within a reasonable time, usually a few days.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, tell us first and we'll try to fix it. If you're still unsatisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

9. Children

BetweenPages isn't intended for children under 15. We don't knowingly collect their information; if we learn we have, we'll delete it.

10. Changes

If we change this policy materially, we'll say so in the app. Each version is dated, and the current version is shown at the top of this page.
