Terms of Service

Version 2026-08-19 · Last updated 2026-08-19

The short version

This summary is for readability. The sections below are the actual terms.

1. Who we are, and what this is

BetweenPages ("BetweenPages", "we", "us") is operated by SideQuestAI (ABN 50 405 936 474). These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a binding agreement between you and us, and they apply whenever you use BetweenPages.

BetweenPages reads an EPUB file you provide and builds a private "knowledge graph" from it, characters, events, relationships, places and themes, then answers your questions about that book without revealing anything past the point you've read.

If you don't agree to these Terms, please don't use BetweenPages.

2. Your books, and your responsibility for them

This is the most important section. By uploading or otherwise providing any file to BetweenPages, you represent and warrant that:

We do not verify, monitor, or take any position on how you obtained your files. We have no practical way to do so and we do not try. Responsibility for the lawfulness of the files you provide, and for how you obtained them, rests entirely with you. We accept no liability arising from files you provide, and you use BetweenPages on that basis.

In plain English: bring books you actually own. Where you got them is between you and whoever you got them from. Not us. If you upload something you had no right to, that's on you, not on BetweenPages.

3. What we do with your files

You keep all rights in the files you provide. You are not giving us ownership of anything.

You grant us a limited, non-exclusive, revocable licence to temporarily reproduce and process your file solely to operate the service for you: parsing it, building your knowledge graph, and making that available to your account. This licence exists only so the software can do the job you asked it to do. Permission to process the EPUB ends when transient analysis ends; permission to retain and use the derived graph ends when you delete the book or your account.

Your files are private to your account. We do not publish, share, sell, or make your files or their contents available to other users. We do not use your books or your knowledge graphs to train AI models.

We do not use your book for training. Analysis runs to build the graph, and the application discards the source afterwards. Where extraction runs on a third-party AI provider, that provider handles the text under its own terms and technical settings, which we do not control.

What we currently keep: your EPUB is held only in volatile server memory during analysis, never saved to persistent storage by the application, and discarded when analysis ends. We retain a mechanically screened knowledge graph of short factual notes, not the EPUB or chapter text. BetweenPages will not provide verbatim passages, exhaustive event lists, chapter-by-chapter recaps, whole-book summaries or retellings from that graph. If this processing or retention model ever changes, we will update these Terms and tell you before the change applies.

4. Your account

5. Acceptable use

Please don't:

Copyright notices. If you believe material handled by BetweenPages infringes your rights, email support@betweenpages.ai with the work concerned, the allegedly infringing material, your contact details, and enough information for us to investigate and respond.

We may suspend or close an account that breaches these Terms. Where it's reasonable to do so, we'll tell you why and give you a chance to fix it first.

6. Credits and payment

Nothing here limits your rights to a refund or remedy under the Australian Consumer Law, see section 8.

7. The service is provided "as is"

BetweenPages is automated. Knowledge graphs are generated by software and language models, and they will sometimes be incomplete or wrong. In particular, spoiler protection is a best effort, not a guarantee. Do not rely on it as though it were certain.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, and subject to section 8, we exclude all warranties, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost data, lost profits, or loss arising from inaccurate output, spoilers, service interruption, or files you provided. Where our liability cannot lawfully be excluded, it is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or (b) AUD $100.

8. Your rights under Australian Consumer Law

Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Nothing in these Terms excludes, restricts or modifies those guarantees. Where they apply, you may be entitled to a remedy regardless of anything else in these Terms, and sections 7 and 9 apply only to the extent the law allows.

9. You cover us for your breach

If someone brings a claim against us because of files you provided or because you broke these Terms, you agree to indemnify us for the reasonable costs, damages and legal fees that result, except to the extent the claim was caused by our own breach or negligence, and subject to section 8.

In plain English: if a rights-holder comes after us over a file you uploaded without the right to use it, you cover the cost of dealing with it.

10. Ending things

You can stop using BetweenPages and delete your account at any time from your Profile page. Deleting your account deletes your knowledge graphs, chats and reading progress. We may close accounts that breach these Terms, and we may discontinue the service with reasonable notice.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. If a change is material, we'll let you know in the app and ask you to accept the new version before you keep using BetweenPages. Each version is dated, and we record which version your account accepted and when.

12. Privacy

How we handle personal information is described in our Privacy Policy. In short: we collect as little as we can, we don't sell your data, and we don't train AI models on your books.

13. If this service changes hands

BetweenPages may be operated by a different legal entity in future, for example if the business incorporates, restructures, or is sold. You agree that we may assign or novate these Terms, and transfer your account and associated data, to that entity, provided it takes on these same obligations to you. We'll tell you in the app if that happens. You may transfer your rights under these Terms only with our written consent.

In plain English: if BetweenPages becomes a company later, your account and these terms carry across without you having to sign up again, and the new entity is bound by the same promises.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia, and the courts of that jurisdiction have non-exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute. Before starting formal proceedings, please email us, most things are faster to fix that way.
